During these enlightened times when females are successfully running for office, operating their own female taxi companies and joining the male dominated trades; few appear to be entering the plumbing business. Indeed, a recent survey by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs reveals that less than 1% of New Zealand’s plumbers are sheilas. But can you blame them? Even the blokes get sick of crawling around under buildings infested with webs (and their occupants), dead rodents and miniature rivers of effluent from broken pipes. Life can often be a bummer when you’re a plumber!

Nevertheless, we hardy plumbers are passionate about plumbing and are prepared to tackle each job; regardless of the difficulties involved. Interestingly, it appears that the female ranks are growing worldwide, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. Dedicated female plumbing firms are finding a niche in a male dominated occupation; and providing a very good service in the market place. Meanwhile, we know that Kiwi chicks can be very resourceful; and having a few more in our industry can only be a good thing.

Despite the current rollercoaster nature of the world’s economy; plumbing emergencies will always require attention by seasoned professionals. Winter rain can be a frequent problem when it decides to hammer away at tired roofs. Miniature swimming pools can often form above the ceiling. If you suspect that an unwanted lake is starting to build beneath your roof; then you need to start rattling your dags rather quickly! Call Mr Plumber immediately in the first instance. Then drill a small hole in the ceiling where you suspect the water is starting to build. Make sure that a bucket (or two) is at hand to catch the water. These simple measures could prevent an expensive ceiling repair before Mr Plumber arrives to mend that naughty roof!
